How to bicycle in close proximity to traffic

With summer weather upon us, there's a good chance you'll be spending as much time outdoors as possible. And for many people, this means jumping on their bicycle and taking to the road.

Riding a bicycle in close proximity to traffic is dangerous, as you always have to concern yourself with a driver who could cause an accident.

Here are some tips you can follow to maintain your safety:

  • Keep your head on a swivel: In other words, be aware of everything that's going on around you. From moving vehicles to parked vehicles to road hazards, an awareness of your surroundings will keep you safe.
  • Use hand signals: Even if a driver doesn't know what your hand signal means, it's enough to get their attention. Get into the habit of using these signals, such as when you're slowing down or making a turn.
  • Use a bicycle lane, if available: Even if you're comfortable riding in the flow of traffic, a bicycle lane is a much better option. When you're riding here, you don't have any concerns about motor vehicles getting in your way.

Along with the above tips, wear the proper safety gear, including a helmet, every time you get on your bicycle

If you're injured in a car-bicycle accident, call 911 for immediate help. There's a good chance that you've suffered major injuries, so receiving medical treatment is critical to stabilizing your condition.

As your recovery progresses, turn some of your attention to your legal rights. You may be able to take action against the negligent driver with hopes of obtaining compensation for your injuries, damages and financial losses.
