While many head trauma injuries are minor, others require immediate medical attention. Neglecting to treat an injury in the appropriate manner can result in additional damage and even death.

There are a variety of symptoms associated with serious head trauma. They include the following:

  • Severe headache
  • Facial bleeding
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Slurred speech
  • Seizures
  • Inability to use an arm and/or leg

Here are three first aid tips to follow in the event of severe head trauma:

  • Stay where you are until help arrives: Attempting to move after a head injury can make things worse. If possible, stay where you are with your head and shoulders slightly elevated.
  • Stop the bleeding: Not every type of head injury results in bleeding. However, if it occurs, it’s critical to apply firm pressure with a clean cloth, piece of clothing or gauze. If you suspect a skull fracture, don’t apply direct pressure as it can cause additional damage.
  • Focus on breathing: This allows you to remain calm until help arrives. Take slow and steady breaths, counting them one at a time.

Any type of head trauma injury, such as bleeding on the brain or a fractured skull, requires medical attention. Your doctor will run a variety of tests to diagnose your condition and implement the right type of treatment strategy.

Once you’re stabilized and begin to recover, learn more about the cause of the accident. If another party was at fault, find out what legal steps you can take to seek compensation for your injuries as well as related damages.
