Signs to help you spot a drunk driver

| May 16, 2019 | Personal Injury |

Even though it’s against the law, there will always be people who drink and drive. Unfortunately, a drunk driver has the potential to cause an accident that injures or kills an innocent person (or people).

When you’re driving, keep your eyes open for anyone who appears to be under the influence. Here are some of the most common signs that a driver is intoxicated:

  • Driving the wrong way on a one-way street
  • Illegal turning
  • Failure to use headlights at night
  • Erratic braking
  • Striking or nearly striking objects and motor vehicles
  • Inability to stay in their lane of travel
  • Swerving and weaving
  • Wide turns
  • Pushing their face against the windshield
  • Slow response at traffic signals
  • Consuming alcohol in a moving vehicle

If you spot a drunk driver, the first thing you should do is keep your distance. You know they’re under the influence, so getting too close will increase the risk of an accident.

From there, call 911 to report what you’re seeing. Share all the necessary information with the dispatcher, such as the location of the vehicle, make and model, color and license plate number.

Even if you’re completely sober, you could still be part of an accident with an intoxicated driver. If this happens, call 911 and administer first aid until paramedics arrive.

Your immediate attention should turn to your health and making a full recovery. Once you understand your prognosis and have a treatment plan in place, contact your insurance company to file a claim. It’s important to protect your legal rights at this time, as you want to receive all the compensation that’s due you.
