Drivers can become distracted from a myriad of things other than their mobile device. For as long as cars have been around, drivers have been driving distracted and that’s long before mobile phones were invented. Think back to the original car phones. They would plug into the cigarette lighter. It’s not just mobile devices that can cause a driver to become distracted.
One of the most distracting things a driver can do is eat while operating their vehicle. One hand will have to be off the steering wheel. If something spills, the driver will likely reach for it or for a napkin to clean it up. If the food is hot, it can burn the driver and lead to an accident.
Many drivers like to get dressed, apply makeup or shave while driving because they constantly run late to work or school. These distractions can easily turn deadly when putting on a shirt, tying a tie, closing your eyes to apply eyeshadow and more.
Having children in the backseat of the car can also be distracting. They can scream, throw toys, choke on food and more. Turning around to talk to the kids or correct them takes your eyes off the road.
Changing the radio stations, CD or playing around with the GPS system can also remove your focus from the road in front of you. When your mind is taken off driving it can lead to an accident.
As you can see, drivers can become distracted by just about anything while behind the wheel. There’s so much that can go wrong when in the car that you need to monitor everyone around you to avoid getting into a car accident that can lead to serious injuries.
