If you’ve been spending time in jail awaiting your criminal trial you, probably have two things on your mind: (1) You care more about achieving a not-guilty verdict than your appearance and (2) you’re willing to do anything and everything that could give you an advantage during your trial, no matter how small that advantage happens to be.

Interestingly, one of the things you can do to help your case has everything to do with your appearance: It relates to how you dress. Here are a few tips to make sure you look your best during your trial:

— Ditch the jumpsuit: If it’s possible, don’t go to court wearing your prison uniform. Get a suit if possible or some nice, respectful clothing.

— Avoid any kind of clothing that could make it look as if you don’t care about the proceedings. Say no to flamboyant, flashy, overly casual and odd clothing.

— Consider wearing some glasses. Many attorneys encourage their violent crime defendants to wear glasses (even fake ones), which make them look more conservative and less threatening. Interestingly, defendants who wore glasses were less likely to be convicted of a crime at trial in a recent study.

When it comes to courtroom attire, depending on the nature of your crimes, certain style advice could either help or harm your legal matter. Therefore, if you’re headed to court, make sure you get your attorneys’ opinion on the matter before making any independent style decisions on your own. If you are having trouble finding the right thing to wear to court, your attorney may even have clothes available to borrow for your next appearance.
