You never know what other drivers on the road are going to do. Each time you get into your vehicle, you are trusting that other drivers are going to operate their vehicles according to universal safety rules that should be common sense. When this happens, everyone can make it to their destinations safely. When it doesn’t, serious and fatal accidents tragically occur.

As a driver, one of your primary focuses is getting to where you need to go without having an accident. It isn’t possible to avoid every accident, but you should remember some basic tips each time you get behind the wheel.

Take your time and drive courteously

You can’t rush when you drive. Rushing will only result in your taking unnecessary risks and could lead to a crash. Instead, you should take your time when you are on your way somewhere. Try to be a courteous driver to help other drivers get to where they need to go safely. Don’t tailgate, switch lanes without warning or try to make it through a yellow light. Follow traffic laws regarding using your turn signal and right of way rules.

Keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road

You must keep at least one hand on the steering wheel when you drive. People tend to think that they can drive with their knees when drinking or eating, or using other methods. This is never safe, especially if you are in traffic or driving at higher speeds. You have to be sure that you are giving your attention to driving.

Don’t become distracted by your cellphone, billboards, other passengers or anything else. Your mind must be fully on your driving duties. One general recommendation is to drive while paying attention to what is going on 12 seconds in front of your vehicle.

Watch others and try to drive proactively

You can’t control what other drivers do, but you might be able to drive proactively to prevent them from slamming into you. Don’t try to “play chicken” with other drivers. If it looks like they are going to run a red light, don’t try to make it through before them. You also have to watch out for pedestrians and bicyclists in the area. Remember that they have the right of way in crosswalks.

If you are struck by another driver, make sure that you report the accident. You may need to seek medical care if you have an injury. Once you have done those, you can decide how to proceed with cleaning up the aftermath of the crash.
