Safety sense overruled by texting and driving

Texting and driving is easily the most common and often the most dangerous driving distraction. Studies have reviewed many reasons why it is so dangerous, such as the fact that it is a manual, cognitive and visual distraction all rolled up into one.

Researchers have found another reason, though, which they refer to as a sixth sense. They say that it protects drivers even through many types of distraction. They noted things like emotional driving and daydreaming behind the wheel.

"The driver's mind can wander and his or her feelings may boil," the researchers noted, "but a sixth sense keeps a person safe at least in terms of veering off course."

This is perhaps part of the reason you can sometimes drive while your mind wanders, only to realize after you arrive that you do not remember part of the trip. That sixth sense kicked in and kept you from crashing.

However, when the researchers looked at people who texted while driving, they found no evidence of the sixth sense keeping them safe. Somehow, it seemed to overrule it. That's why so many accidents happen to texting drivers. Not only are they actively ignoring the only thing on which they should be focused, but they're doing it in such a way that the mind's own safety systems cannot keep up.

Have you been hit by someone who was on their phone? This could be the reason that the accident took place. Be sure you understand your rights and how you can seek compensation for medical bills and other costs.
