One of the most dangerous things to be on the road is a cyclist or pedestrian. Both have no protection against the vehicles that may be on the road, meaning that their safety is up to others.
While you can take steps to keep yourself safer, like wearing a helmet or bright colors, accidents may still happen. This is particularly common in high-traffic areas that are close to schools, universities and other populated areas.
In Colorado Springs, the police had to respond to emergency calls when a cyclist was struck by a car. The crash, which took place on North Weber St. and E. Dale St., resulted in the cyclist suffering serious injuries.
The cyclist was taken to the hospital for his injuries, where it is hoped that he will receive the care he needs to survive. The investigation in this case was ongoing as of Oct. 24.
What’s even more surprising is that it was not the first incident of the day. Within the same hour, another crash took place killing a pedestrian near Astrozon and S. Academy Streets.
As you can see, pedestrians and cyclists are both in danger when they’re around the roadways. It is important to take steps to protect yourself, like wearing bright colors, reflective materials and a helmet, but there is no way to predict what will happen. Do what you can to take precautions for yourself so that you have a better chance of surviving an incident if you’re hit. Wearing padding, a helmet or other protective gear could be the difference between life and death.
