In the bike lane: 3 tips for safe summer cycling

Riding your bike can be a great way to get exercise in the warmer months of the year. You like saving money on gas by cycling where you want to go, and you don't have to worry about keeping your car at the ready.

Unfortunately, cycling can result in injuries if you're not careful. Drivers on the roads may not pay attention to cyclists, especially if they're not common in the area. Fortunately, you can take steps to avoid a crash. What can you do to keep yourself safe on your next ride?

1. Use the bike lane

If there is a bike lane where you're riding, use it. It removes any chance that you'll be liable if you are involved in an accident, and those who are driving around you should be familiar with the bike lane and its markings. Be cautious when the bike lane crosses into or out of traffic, so you don't accidentally get side-swiped or rear-ended.

2. Wear bright colors and reflectors

Wearing bright colors and reflective clothing can help you stand out. While drivers should notice you regardless of what you wear, brighter colors, like neon green, yellow or orange, will stick out more than jeans and a plain white tee and help you avoid a cycling accident.

3. Avoid busy times of day

Unless you absolutely have to ride during a busy time of day, try to avoid doing so. Your risk of getting into an accident increases when there are more drivers on the road, so it makes sense to reduce that risk by riding when there are fewer people out and about. If you're casually cycling, try riding on the weekends or after rush hour is over.

These are a few tips you can implement this summer to avoid a crash. Stay safe when you ride, and enjoy your exercise.
